I met him at an exhibition of Ukrainian artists in Copenhagen titled ‘From Ukraine with Love.’ This tall, elderly man was dressed in the colors of the Ukrainian flag—a blue jacket and yellow pants. No one could tell me his name or who he was. I later discovered that he lives in Christiania and had come specifically to visit the exhibition.
He spent most of his time sitting on a sofa with a glass of wine, quietly observing the paintings on the walls, occasionally glancing at me from under the wide brim of his old fishing hat. I, on the other hand, found myself inexplicably drawn to him, unable to take my eyes off him. His presence struck me as quintessentially Danish, and I felt compelled to capture his likeness in a sketch.
An old man with a white beard and a wise, foxy expression, he exuded a sense of contentment with life and the present moment. His loose, well-worn clothes and flip phone embodied for me the philosophy of life in Denmark—someone who truly enjoys each day, approaches problems with humor, loves beauty, and respects others. I still don’t know his name and haven’t formally met him, but it was a great pleasure to capture his character in my art.
